Summary:
J M Barrie had a troubled relationship with the children who inspired Peter Pan. His own life also was deeply complicated. J M Barrie was affected when very young by the death of his brother and his mother's inconsolable grief. His marriage may have been unconsummated. Three of the children that Peter Pan is based on either took their own lives or were killed in the First World War. Beatrix Potter had to give up the love of her life but still created Peter Rabbit and saved parts of the Lake District. The anthropomorphic rabbits in The Tale of Peter Rabbit live in the same Lake District as Arthur Ransome's Captain Flint and the Blackett and Walker families. In the 1920s and 1930s a fuller world is evoked by writers like Edith Nesbit, who creates a generous world where children are well treated. A committed socialist with an exotic and unconventional personal life, her fullest achievement was in The Railway Children. Frances Hodgson Burnett, creator of The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, moved from extreme poverty in Leeds to international success and wealth after a period of living in the United States.
