Summary:
"The cache of Clovis materials located in East Wenatchee, Washington, was discovered in 1987 by workers installing irrigation piping in an apple orchard. Initially referred to as the Richey-Roberts Clovis Cache, the importance of the site has derived from ongoing research into the Clovis culture and the site's particular technological characteristics. In this work, Bruce B. Huckell and his co-editors, Bruce A. Bradley and Peter J. Mehringer (1933-2019) present a detailed technological analysis of the flaked stone artifacts that have been recovered from the site. The editors note that the value of studying such caches lies in what they may reveal about transportation patterns among Paleolithic inhabitants of North America. Because lithic tools often provide evidence of initial quarrying at one location, followed by finishing work and storage at another location, the caches where these tools are unearthed permit deductions about the makers' routes between quarries and camps, as well as the different characteristics of cache sites versus hunting camps and kill sites. Unique to the East Wenatchee cache is the number of unusually large fluted points that were found there. Because these points are so much larger than what most researchers would consider "utilitarian," there is evidence to suggest ceremonial use. Ultimately, the goal of this study is to describe these flaked stone artifacts, analyze the manufacturing strategies indicated by their flaking patterns, and draw conclusions about what they may indicate for patterns of Clovis biface production. Additionally, the editors explore what the ceremonial implications of the larger points may indicate about certain aspects of Clovis culture. Clovis on the Columbia: Flaked Stone Artifacts from the East Wenatchee Clovis Cache provides important nuances to our understanding of the lifeways and culture of some of the earliest human inhabitants of the North American continent"-- Provided by publisher.
