Summary:
Isobel McArthur's The Grand Old Opera House Hotel is an ensemble musical comedy incorporating pastiche versions of popular songs from the operatic repertoire. It premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, during the Fringe Festival in August 2023, when it won an Edinburgh Fringe First Award. The play is set in a building that used to be a magnificent opera house, graced by the leading sopranos and tenors of the age, but which has since been transformed into a bland and somewhat seedy hotel. When shy Aaron joins the hotel's staff, he's faced with emotionally volatile guests, apathetic colleagues and management that doesn't have a clue. There are rumours of singing ghosts haunting the corridors, and when Aaron hears a glorious singing voice coming from one of the guest rooms, he goes into battle with the hotel's magical chaos to find out the truth. The premiere production was directed by Gareth Nicholls, with set and costume design by Ana Inés Jabares-Pita and lighting design by Lizzie Powell. It was performed by Ali Watt, Karen Fishwick, Christina Modestou, Ann Louise Ross, Betty Valencia, Laura Lovemore and Barrie Hunter.
