- Summary:
- Deborah Bruce's play Dixon and Daughters is a drama about families and forgiveness, exploring the connection between domestic abuse and the criminalisation of women. It was first performed in the Dorfman auditorium of the National Theatre, London, on 25 April 2023 (previews from 15 April), co-produced with Clean Break. The play is set in a family home in Bradford, with scenes often taking place in more than one room at a time. Mary, the 64-year-old widow of Ray Dixon, has just been released from prison, and her daughters Bernie and Julie, together with her granddaughter Ella, are welcoming her home. Mary wants to come home and forget all about it, but her stepdaughter Briana has other ideas. Over two tumultuous days, the family is forced to confront not only their past, but everything about themselves. The premiere production was directed by Róisín McBrinn, with set and costume design by Kat Heath and lighting design by Paule Constable. It was performed by Bríd Brennan, Alison Fitzjohn, Yazmin Kayani, Andrea Lowe, Posy Sterling and Liz White.
