- Summary:
- Ed Edwards' England & Son is a one-man play exploring the impact of capitalism, empire and Thatcherite politics on the nation, through the life of a juvenile offender let down by both family and state. It was first performed by the celebrated political comedian Mark Thomas in Paines Plough's Roundabout at Summerhall, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, on 2 August 2023, winning a Fringe First Award. The play begins with the narrator sleeping rough on the streets, and witnessing his best friend Paul being crushed to death in the back of a bin lorry. As the story unfolds, we learn of his difficult relationship with his father (their surname is England, as in the play's title), who was brutalised during his time serving in the army overseas, and the son's subsequent suffering at the hands of the state, and a partial glimpse of redemption. The premiere production was directed by Cressida Brown, and performed by Mark Thomas.
