- <p>This work reprint, annotates, and indexes virtually all mentionof Emily Dickinson in the first decade of her publication, triplingthe known references to the poet during the nineties. Much of thismaterial, drawn from scrapbooks of clippings, rare journals, andcrumbling newspapers, was on the verge of extinction.</p><p>Modern audiences will be struck by the impact of Dickinson'spoetry on her first readers. We learn much about the taste of theperiod and the relationship between publishers, reviewers, and thereading public. It demonstrates that Dickinson enjoyed a widerpopular reception than had been realized: readers were astonishedby her creative brilliance.</p>.
