In Marxist theory, socialism, or the socialist mode of production, refers to a specific historical phase of economic development and its corresponding set of social relations that eventually supersede capitalism. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born into the Hindu Modh family in Porbandar, India, in 1869. He was the son of Karamchand Gandhi, the diwan (Prime Minister) of Porbandar, and Putlibai, Karamchand's fourth wife, a Hindu of the Pranami Vaishnava order. Gandhiji considered the individual as the pivot of all social concerns. He should be central focus of all social services for the alleviation of his sufferings.
