Summary:
This cookbook contains 68 culinary recipes and several sketches contributed by members of the Young family of Chester County, Pennsylvania in the early 20th century. The notebook itself is a blank ruled volume printed in Philadelphia by Christopher Sower Co. and is titled “No. 3 Single Entry. Normal School Blanks and Book-Keeping. Cash Book, Salad Book, etc. Lyte’s Practical Book-Keeping.” The latter portion of the volume is blank (p. 26-53). There are 12 leaves laid in (p. 1-3, 6-7), most of which are recipes. One of these recipes is E.H. Young’s recipe for chocolate fudge. The volume opens with sketches by Hugh Young (p. 1-7) of Modena, Pennsylvania. These sketches were likely completed sometime around 1900. There are illustrations of boats, a “P & RR” train, and a distinctive fence, in addition to other doodles. The next portion of the volume contains recipes (p. 9-25), examples of which include a dessert called moon shine (p. 10), Swiss steak (p. 13), lemon meringue (p. 17), crullers (p. 19), Bertha’s cake (p. 21), chow chow (p. 24), butterless eggless milkless cake (p. 55), and Sighi’s good pickles (p. 56).
