Summary:
In the eighteenth century, County Armagh was famously referred to as ?a very independent county' given the distinctive nature of politics and electioneering in parliamentary elections. This book analyses the background to, and traces details of general elections and by-elections for the county and borough seats in Armagh. In this period before secret ballots when polls often lasted for weeks, the following electioneering practices are described: patronage, canvassing of voters by candidates, relations between landlords and freeholders; 'conjunctions' and 'running horses'; festivities
