Ian Aitken attempts a rigorous and systematic application of realist film theory to the analysis of particular films. He provides a comparative analysis of the theories of Grierson, Bazin and Kracauer, also throws new light on Lukács theory of realism, and attempts to establish a new paradigm of film theory around realism.
