Summary:
This case explores the application of Crisis Management Theory by the city leadership in Prattville, Alabama, to a controversy surrounding its annual Christmas parade. Prattville, with a population of around 40,000, has found strength in hosting community events, which has become a focal point of city leaders and Mayor Bill Gillespie. However, while Prattville maintains a strong small-town reputation and attitude, residents have been outspoken for some time against the LGBTQ community. When headlines notified residents that the local LGBTQ group was registered to have a float in the annual Christmas parade, chaos ensued. From the city council facing backlash for not removing the group from the parade to Gillespie unilaterally making the decision and subsequently facing a federal lawsuit for alleged discrimination, December 2024 was filled with crises in Prattville. Through this case, students will be asked to examine the decisions made by Gillespie and the city council and apply Crisis Management Theory to their crisis strategies and practices.
