- Summary:
- This case involves a woman in law enforcement. Early in her career, she acquired significant experience in various aspects of law enforcement in a medium-sized city in the Midwest and progressed quickly in rank from patrol officer to captain. She continued to advance her career by moving to a smaller city on the Southeast coast as assistant chief of police. Two years later, she was hired as the chief of police of a nearby small town. At this point, her professional world began to unravel. Because of the way she addressed a disciplinary issue with a ranking, long-serving police officer, she experienced difficulties on the job that she had not faced previously, i.e., low morale, high turnover, and a political dimension of the job for which she was ill-prepared. As a result, she lost the respect of many subordinate officers and the confidence of two major town officials. This case is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate courses in human resource management, organizational behavior, management, leadership, and criminal justice.
