Summary:
The purpose of this case study is to introduce students to the basic principles and mechanisms of bonds ("fixed-income" investments). The stock market is undeniably more ubiquitous for business-focused students, with daily reporting and myriad business shows dedicated to "the market" (i.e., The Street; Market Call). Indeed, prevalent names such as Google, Tesla, and Microsoft-in mainstream business-and Nike, Under Armour, and Draft Kings-in the sport-business sector specifically-receive far greater attention for their equity investment possibility versus any debt-based potential. To be sure, although awareness of stock exchanges such as the NYSE and NASDAQ in the United States, or the TSX in Canada is high, familiarity with fixed-income markets is far less understood. Thus, the current case provides elucidation to this important investment option. Indeed, the characteristics of bond investing are detailed in a comprehensible manner to expose students to the differences and pros/cons of equity and debt (fixed-income) investing.
