Summary:
This case is based on Strings for Hope, a small nonprofit in Nashville, Tennessee. Cindy, the founder, manages all aspects of the organization, including product design, distribution, sales, and other business functions. With a passion for music and her desire to eliminate hunger in her community, she began crafting jewelry from discarded instrument strings and selling them to friends and co-workers. As the popularity of the bracelets grew, she slowly expanded sales to craft shows, music festivals, and a mobile cart. Proceeds from the sale of the bracelets went directly to hunger relief in her county. The case is most appropriate for courses in operations and social responsibilities. This description-based teaching case is targeted at junior- or senior-level undergraduate business students. It may be used in operations management courses (forecasting and forecast error) or strategic management courses to illustrate the importance of forecasting in business plan development.
