Summary:
The case discusses the challenges Liam Thompson, the CEO of Visuallure (a hypothetical US-based startup), faced as he sought to expand his business. Thompson was operating in the film photography industry, which was losing revenues. He was unsure which sectors could provide him a competitive advantage as the film photography industry was declining, and he had no competency in digital photography. Thompson observed that some of his competitors were doing well in the cosmetics business. For example, a competitor successfully operated in the film and digital photography equipment and supplies industry and X-ray apparatus industry, apart from cosmetics. Following his competitor, Thompson was considering whether to enter the cosmetics sector. He hired a strategy consultancy firm to help him understand how to diversify successfully and whether to diversify into related and unrelated businesses. He also wanted to know more about the competitor's diversification, given that the competitor earned almost the same revenues from cosmetics as film photography and X-ray apparatus. Through this case, students are expected to learn the statistical tool Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
