Summary:
In February 2025, UK-based Unilever PLC (Unilever) announced the sudden stepping down of Hein Schumacher as the CEO and Board Director from March 1, 2025. Schumacher joined Unilever in July 2022 and assumed the CEO role from July 2023. Fernando Fernandez, Unilever's CFO, was the incoming CEO. Schumacher's exit surprised shareholders as, under Schumacher's leadership, Unilever's stock market performance increased by 9%, though sales growth, operating margin, and net profit declined. Although the Unilever board appreciated Schumacher's strategic turnaround plan for Unilever's performance revival to the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level, the board also shared discontent with Schumacher's speed of execution of the plan. According to analysts, shareholder activist Nelson Peltz significantly influenced Schumacher's exit from Unilever, as there were conflicts between the two. He may have also been responsible for the exit of Unilever's previous CEO, Alan Jope. The board expected that Fernando's decisive and results-oriented approach would help in a faster turnaround. What should Fernandez do to create better shareholder value and enhance Unilever's financial performance? Is he likely to be a better CEO than Schumacher? What influence could Peltz have had on Schumacher's exit from Unilever?
