In January 2025, one year after its relaunch as a state-owned entity under the management of the Secretariat of National Defense, Mexicana de Aviación, led by CEO Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez, faced a pivotal moment. This historic airline, once the oldest in Mexico, had ceased operations in 2010 and sought a comeback 13 years later. Despite initial success transporting 382,011 passengers in its first year of the new operation, the airline announced the closure of eight of its 17 routes from its headquarters at Felipe Ángeles International Airport, located in Zumpango, about 50km north of Mexico City downtown. This decision, presented as a strategic review by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, sparked concerns over the airline's sustainability and strategic direction. Within this context, the case examines the complex challenges Ávila Bojórquez encountered, including route profitability reassessment, fleet management with new and leased aircraft, and maintaining stakeholder confidence. Students will be asked whether Mexicana de Aviación should continue cutting costs to achieve immediate financial stability or keep increasing investments, such as expanding its fleet, to enhance market presence and achieve other strategic gains.
