Summary:

Saint Francis Inn is a soup kitchen and thrift shop run by Franciscan friars, who have been ministering to the suffering poor in the Kensington section of Philadelphia since 1987. Over the past few decades, Kensington has become known for its rampant illicit drug use and increasing numbers of people suffering from homelessness, which impacts the quality of life of lower-income families living in the neighborhood. However, things are beginning to change, and it is not all good. Gentrification is increasing the cost of housing in Kensington, and real estate development is pushing those suffering from homelessness and substance use disorder into more remote areas in North Philadelphia, which are farther away from the Inn. Some long-time residents are selling their homes to real estate developers, which is changing the makeup of residents there. Several factors have led to a significant decline in the number of people Saint Francis is able to serve under its current business model, and this decline can be expected to continue. Faced with a confluence of sociological and economic changes, the Franciscans must decide whether, or how, to modify their ministry to adapt to the new needs of their stakeholders. Using formal moral theory and strategic management theory, readers of this case study have the opportunity to develop morally sound decisions in the face of complex ethical and business issues.
