- Summary:
- The case concerns the challenges of corporate social responsibility (CSR) investment faced by Liam Thompson, an entrepreneur in the U.S. shoe industry. Thompson lacked the resources to invest in different kinds of CSR activities. He read about how one of the famous players in the shoe industry, Crocs, faced CSR challenges in multiple areas ranging from customer complaints to environmental concerns. Thompson wanted to avoid all such controversies to the best extent possible, given that he was to launch an initial public offering (IPO). Thompson hired a strategy consultancy company, Ascend, and asked them to conduct a global survey of CEOs from stock exchange-listed companies in the shoe industry and evaluate how different CSR activities influenced the market valuation of companies. Ascend collected data through a structured questionnaire. Ascend employed factor analysis followed by multiple linear regression analysis on the collected data to determine the critical priority areas concerning CSR activities and reported them to Thompson. Which CSR variables were significant for influencing a firm's market valuation? What was their relative significance? What conclusions can Thomson draw?
