- Summary:
- Rick Smith started a business producing stun guns in 1993 after his friends were shot to death in a road rage incident in the United States. That business became Axon Enterprise, Inc., a financial success story fueled by innovation. With innovation, however, came risk-some of which was difficult to quantify. A critical decision-making point arose for the company in 2023 with the company's controversial Project ION, which explored the development of Taser-weaponized drones powered by artificial intelligence. This case explores the many factors that contribute to potential value creation-and extraction-for stakeholders and encourages students to integrate ethical decision-making into strategic decision-making for a business.
