Summary:
In 2023, Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA (SQM), a leading lithium mining company headquartered in Chile, needed to give the Chilean government control of lithium mining after Prime Minister Gabriel Boric Font announced changes in the country's lithium mining policy and proposed nationalizing the lithium industry through public-private partnerships (PPPs). Given the adverse effect lithium extraction had on freshwater aquifers and wetlands, the Chilean Prime Minister, through PPPs, intended to control the increase in lithium production and promote sustainability in the Chilean economy. However, investors started selling off SQM shares as they became skeptical about SQM's operations and profitability due to possible PPP. According to critics, Chile could also lose its national competitiveness in lithium mining owing to PPP. Chile had already lost its number one lithium producer status, and industry experts had forecasted that its ranking might further slide as other countries established several new projects. Now SQM faced a dilemma: Should the company stay in Chile and explore a PPP with the government or grow and diversify in other countries? Should SQM forgo Chile's sustainability for its own?
