Summary:
This case situates rapper Kendrick Lamar, the first hip-hop artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, as a central figure in the ongoing negotiation between protest and popular culture. His 2025 Super Bowl LIX (59) halftime show raises urgent questions about the capacity and limitations of protest within mass-mediated corporate spectacle. Performed at one of the world's most commercially saturated and globally televised events, Lamar's halftime appearance enacted a dynamic interplay between dissent and commodification; activism and entertainment; visibility and containment. This case study draws upon Richard Dyer's (1979, 1998) star theory, Judith Butler's (1990) concept of performativity, and Stuart Hall's (1980) encoding/decoding model, to analyze how Lamar's carefully choreographed performance, lyrical choices, and embodied gestures functioned as both a critique of systemic oppression and a negotiation of his stardom within hegemonic structures.
