Summary:
This CI focuses on the British monarchy, arguably one of the oldest family-based enterprises in the world. Americans tend to pay attention to the House of Windsor only when there is a scandal, wedding or funeral. However, in the United Kingdom, the monarchy has its own media universe that chronicles every single moment of its members' lives, especially their peccadillos. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are better known to most as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Their royal wedding in May of 2018 as well as the birth of their first child, Archie, were closely followed in the US. But behind the scenes, trouble was brewing for the newest member of the monarchy, leading to a very public meltdown. Deemed Megxit by the British tabloids, the voluntary resignation and self-exile of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has led to an unimaginable airing of the House of Windsor's dirty laundry. The story reached an alarming and extraordinary crescendo with a two-hour televised interview with Oprah Winfrey on CBS in February 2021. Relations only worsened over the next years with the release of a Netflix's documentary and the 2023 publication of Harry's book, Spare. This description-based critical incident focuses on the onboarding lessons associated with the British Royal Family and their business that can be applied to anyone entering a family that also has a family-owned company. It is appropriate for use in undergraduate or graduate courses such as business communication, crisis management, conflict management, human resources management, and family business. The CI is designed to encourage learners to more intentionally explore organizational-fit issues during the onboarding phase of entering an organization by demonstrating the parallels between the due diligence that should be exercised when entering a family, especially one that may concurrently be engaged in owning a business.
