- Summary:
- Home conversion projects are an increasing feature of the UK construction industry, specifically served by small-and medium-sized enterprise (SME) construction firms, which form the majority of employment in this sector. A home conversion project presents a range of distinctive project management challenges for both the client and the contractor or builder. While these projects may be considered small in the context of construction projects, they represent a substantial financial commitment for most households and carry significant risk for the homeowner. There are also distinctive decisions to be made around project scope and anticipated future use. For the SME builder, there are also distinctive risks and opportunity costs emanating from the often-informal nature of subcontracting in this sector, changes to the project conditions and the limited human resources of the firm. In this case study, such a project is presented. This case study presents a home conversion project for the purposes of senior care. It is written by the client and the builder. Therefore, it includes both the client's and builder's perspectives, with rich detail on tasks, resources, costs and risks. This enables a full range of project management techniques to be practiced throughout the entire project lifecycle.
