- Summary:
- This case explores the challenges and complexities that led to the decline of Tupperware's once prominent brand. Tupperware was once an industry leader for food storage containers, patenting the airtight, non-spill seal that made its product one of a kind. However, despite holding a monopoly in the industry and marketing sales with its unique Tupperware parties, the company struggled to adapt once imitators began making comparable products that were more affordable and more convenient to purchase. With a slow-to-adjust approach, Tupperware fell further and further in sales, market capitalization, and stock until the decision was made to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Students will be asked to examine the rise and fall of Tupperware and apply decision theory to the company's resolution. Through this case, students will learn and understand the importance of decision theory and how it relates to businesses taking the correct action during significant moments in their history.
