- Summary:
- In June, 2019, Libra Association, an institution of Facebook that deals with finance, IT, and social media, introduced Libra (later renamed Diem). Libra was to be a cryptocurrency whose value would remain relatively stable, unlike Bitcoin. This case deals with a choice presented to an investment firm in terms of the impact of this news on returns on various other financial assets. At the onset of the news, the wealth manager thinks about how Libra could be a turning point in history. The manager's biggest concern is whether Libra would completely alter the current investment scenario and what its global status would be in the monetary framework. The case looks at whether the managers would be required to consider the potential impact of Libra on the global financial landscape, particularly its potential to disrupt the dominance of the U.S. dollar in international trade. It also looks at assessing the potential systemic impacts of such a digital currency initiative, anticipating Facebook's future moves in this space.
