- Summary:
- The Civil War of 49-48 BCE was a period of radical change within the Roman political institution. It was also an incredibly emotionally taxing time for individual Romans, who quickly had to decide which side of the war to support or whether to join the conflict at all. Many felt compelled to follow one of two leaders, either Julius Caesar or Gnaeus Pompey. In the Roman epic Bellum Civile, the poet Lucan dramatizes this difficult decision through a conversation between Cato, a follower of Stoicism and a champion of the Republic, and Brutus, the future assassin of Caesar, who at this point is still unsure about joining the war. Cato eventually decides to join the war, taking over from Pompey and becoming a famous defender of the Republic. In analyzing how Cato comes to this decision, and how he convinces Brutus of the same, this case examines the question of how leaders identify the need for change, and what strategies they employ to communicate this need to followers. It also discusses the value of adaptive leadership and emotional intelligence particularly during times of institutional crisis or radical change.
