- This case study traces the ascension of Wu Zetian to throne of the Tang dynasty in 690 ce and the establishment of her own dynasty, the Zhou dynasty. Wu Zetian achieved her rapid ascent from a humble concubine to a ruling sovereign through her exceptional political skills: the ability to influence through persuasion, manipulation, and negotiation (Mintzberg, 1983). Students will examine Wu Zetian's ascent to power by focusing on her political skills through the lens of Political Skill Inventory (PSI): networking ability, apparent sincerity, social astuteness, and interpersonal influence. Students will also consider why and how these skills remain a crucial asset to effect transformative leadership, particularly for female leaders.
