- Summary:
- In 2024, Gaurav had to decide between continuing with his struggling polyvinyl chloride (PVC) board business in West Bengal, India, or returning to his parental business of alcoholic beverage distribution, Gautam Traders (GT). Gaurav set up a PVC board business under his parents' liquor distribution business in 2019. The business faced tremendous competition and experienced losses in 2023. Although the alcoholic beverage distribution business had to be abruptly shut down in 2022 because of changes in government policies, in 2024 the company received an offer from a government agency to restart their business with a five-year contract for their prior distribution territory. Managing the PVC business took up a lot of Gaurav's time and required significant immediate investments. The alcoholic beverage distribution business would likely give assured returns, but it would mean Gaurav would have to divest the PVC business at a loss. He could only operate one business; hence, Gaurav needed to weigh the strategic, financial, and emotional aspects and choose one business.
