Summary:
The chairman of the Hospital Authority supervising the South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC's) was facing three significant challenges: leadership turnover, quality of care, and accreditation. A search was underway for the seventh chief executive in 20 years. The Hospital Authority was exercising its responsibility to encourage the efficient use of resources (Cadbury, 2000). The long-term impact and instability of executive leadership impacted the clinical performance outcomes of the hospital. Furthermore, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations issued a preliminary denial of accreditation because of indications of threats to patient safety. At the same time, reviewing the clinical performance outcomes for the years 2017 and 2018, the chairman considered possible changes to the Hospital Authority's relationship with the SGMC executive leadership team going forward. What changes should the Hospital Authority have made to the corporate governance structure to provide the necessary accountability and reporting, redefining relationships and expectations, and changes to rules and practices to reclaim accreditation? Should the Hospital Authority chairman have guided the search toward an outside CEO successor for SGMC and empowered that individual to make the necessary organizational changes? Finally, what could the Hospital Authority chairman have done to redirect SGMC's strategic focus? This case is most appropriate for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in healthcare administration and healthcare strategy.
