Summary:
This case study examines the factors leading to the shutdown of the services provided by Mitr Clinics, and the subsequent impact on the transgender community. Established in 2021 under the USAID-funded program, these clinics provided specialized healthcare services, including gender-affirming treatments, mental health counseling, and HIV prevention and care. However, in January 2025, an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 90-day freeze on foreign aid, leading to an abrupt cessation of USAID funding. This financial disruption forced the shutdown of Mitr Clinics, leaving over 6,000 transgender individuals without essential medical support. The closure exacerbated existing healthcare challenges, particularly for those reliant on hormone therapy, HIV treatment, and mental health services. This case study explores the broader implications of the Mitr Clinics' closure, including its impact on healthcare access, employment, and community well-being. The case also highlights the critical need for sustainable, locally supported healthcare initiatives to reduce dependence on external aid. By analyzing the intersection of healthcare policy, funding challenges, and transgender rights, this study underscores the importance of integrating specialized services into India's public health system to ensure long-term inclusivity and resilience in transgender healthcare.
