- Summary:
- Set within a multinational financial services and insurance enterprise, we will explore the strategic, operational, and cultural steps involved in launching a pilot Sustainable Software Group (SSG) initiative. This case scenario investigates the ways in which the organization's IT division secured executive leadership support, mobilized teams across the globe, built educational frameworks, and implemented technical governance tools to measure and reduce carbon emissions from software systems. These efforts targeted software running in all environments: co-located facilities, on-premises data centers, and public cloud services. In addition, the case details change-management initiatives such as cross-regional virtual roadshows, technical optimizations, and a network of volunteer 'green champions' that together helped embed sustainability into everyday IT practices. This case provides actionable insights for technology leaders looking to integrate environmental sustainability into enterprise software delivery strategies. These actions reflect and extend principles found in green IT governance literature and reference models for sustainable software engineering (Naumann et al., 2011; Rivas-Asanza et al., 2018), underlining the need for data-driven strategies and strong leadership involvement in such transformations.
