- Summary:
- This case is about a hospital upgrade project carried out by British military engineers in South Sudan, analyzed using the perspective of Responsible Project ManagementSouth Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011. Following independence, the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council determined that ongoing conflict within the country posed a threat to regional peace and security. The United Nations established a peacekeeping mission in the country, aiming to protect civilians and staff, despite having minimum facilities to accommodate them. In 2017, a U.K. Engineer Task Force arrived at the U.N. Bentiu compound to undertake a project to replace the temporary, canvas hospital structures with more durable facilities using recycled cabins. Through effective engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and use of local resources, the project was completed within a restricted budget and a one-year fixed timeframe, and exceeded expectations amid political instability.
