This case study examines the recruitment process for an office supervisory role at the European headquarters in Brussels of a well-known U.S. clothing brand, renowned for its specialization in high-quality apparel. With Mieke, a respected supervisor, nearing retirement, three candidates are shortlisted: Corene, Geertje, and Annika. Despite Annika being the most qualified and meeting all criteria, her past as a crowned Miss Belgian sparks tensions, with biases surfacing among team members. Female colleagues subtly question her reliability and discretion, viewing her through the lens of stereotypes often associated with her previous role. These biases shift the focus from Annika's merit to subjective judgments rooted in societal prejudices, ultimately undermining the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values. To address the division, Karl, the department head, proposes promoting Tina, Mieke's long-time collaborator, to the supervisory role while the new hire replaces Tina.
