Summary:
In the midst of the 'tech cold war' or the rising tensions in the critical chip industry, semiconductors have been dubbed the 'oil' of the 21st century, powering almost all modern technologies. Supply chains disrupted due to the pandemic, macroeconomic slowdowns, and rising geopolitical tensions have laid bare the fragile networks underpinning the semiconductor sector. The United States and Europe are pouring billions into shoring up domestic supplies of chips as growing tensions between China and the West threaten critical sources. The battle to control this industry will shape the future of many, including the world's biggest chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). On 24 February 2024, TSMC officially opened its majority-owned subsidiary and newly built chip factory in Kumamoto, Japan, in an effort to navigate the looming risks. At the same time, Japan's renewed commitment to support its chip industry is bold and strategic. In an ironic twist of events, the United States-China tensions are providing an opportunity for Japan to reclaim its past glory in semiconductors, which some say is its last chance.
