Summary:
This Data Challenge introduces students to material requirements planning (MRP) analysis. MRP is a backward inventory procedure that uses an MRP form to determine the appropriate order quantity and the period when the order should be placed. That is, MRP is an inventory control system that is used for dependent inventory. For example, if a company needs to produce 10 bicycles, then the dependent inventory is the number of parts that will be needed, which would be 10 seats, 10 handlebars, 20 wheels, and so on. In this example, the parts list for the bicycle is called a bill of materials (BOM), and calculating the number of parts needed to complete one bicycle is called exploding the BOM. A BOM can take several forms. However, to complete the MRP form, the BOM should be given as a product structure tree. The information needed to complete the MRP form for all the parts that are needed to complete a final product is as follows: lead time, safety stock, order quantity, inventory on hand, and quantity of any scheduled receipts expected. MRP uses a rolling planning horizon over time. To complete this Data Challenge, students should understand the importance of inventory. In addition, students should understand the difference between dependent and independent demand.
