Summary:
In this Data Challenge, students are presented with a situation where there are two companies manufacturing textiles in India and they dominate the markets in the north and the south. The two companies have multiple factories and markets but are not competitors as they operate in different locations. The two companies are having talks about a merger. Concerns and issues that arise from the merger are whether to keep all the factories open, modify some of the factories into warehouses, or close some factories down. The students will use linear programming methodology to find out which factories should be kept open after the merger, and which markets these factories should serve. The objective of the linear programming methodology will be to minimize costs. Once the solutions from the linear programming methodology are generated, a discussion on the managerial implications that go beyond costs will be initiated. This exercise will focus on (1) how to model the problem using linear programming and (2) expanding the discussion beyond just minimizing costs.
