Summary:
The Data Challenge introduces James Morris, who is responsible for developing a CEO succession plan for a new venture called GeneTech. The young pharmaceutical firm is ready to initiate the initial public offering (IPO) process to attract more investments so that it can develop new drugs that have great potential to cure cancers. CEO recruitment is a high-stakes decision because the new CEO can bring GeneTech to a new height when the firm goes public or vice versa. Based on management theories, James identifies two hypotheses. First, the CEO's characteristics including education level, entrepreneurial experience, industry experience, and international experience are related to IPO success. Second, the CEO's stewardship represented by founder status and ownership significantly influences the effects of these characteristics on IPO success. Testing these two hypotheses helps James identify the best CEO candidate for the firm. This Data Challenge is a tool for instructors to help them teach their students to recognize the important role of data in the managerial decision-making process. It also helps instructors incorporate some strategic management and entrepreneurship concepts into a real business world. This Data Challenge benefits students by helping them learn how to use data to solve a business issue. The Data Challenge is developed for students in management and entrepreneurship majors at senior levels. These students should have some basic knowledge related to the management and entrepreneurship literature and some basic quantitative skills.
