Summary:
In this Data Challenge, undergraduate and graduate students will read about a fictional (though rooted in reality) account of the leader and top management team of a prosperous new-age religious cult, who have to take the organization to a different country setting due to troubles with the law in India. The cult has now become more or less a business that manufactures products and offers health-based services (such as yoga and meditation and alternative plant-based medicines). The cult leader will have to decide, along with his top-level acolytes (cult members who directly work with their cult's leader), which country provides his cult with the best possible options to operate successfully. He will initially be presented with statistics about various GLOBE framework national culture dimension scores, which will help him and his acolytes decide which country would be a good one to escape to. Students will read and process these statistics and use this information to help decide which of the countries would be good potential places for his cult to enter. The leader and team then obtain newer information and more sources of data, which lead them to reevaluate and refine the previous decision. Students will learn about national culture dimensions and examine whether they affect decision-making in international business. Additionally, they will learn about how these national culture dimensions can affect decision-making. Instructors of international business, strategic management, organizational behavior, and communication may find this Data Challenge useful in their courses. Students can evaluate the data in this challenge with simple statistics and without the need for any statistical software package.
