Summary:
This Data Challenge provides students with an opportunity to understand the rise of a privately held digital platform for connected wellness that targets women's reproductive health. The company is a hypothetical case to present students with a classroom learning opportunity purely for the purposes of understanding the complexities of valuation for private companies. The valuation exercise is set within the context of the 2023 market for startups seeking to raise funds or exit during a period in which there was market volatility and valuations were drastically reduced. The company, FemHealth Inc., had cash reserves, but funding for all companies was complicated by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in California and Signature Bank in New York. Venture funding for future growth became difficult to obtain, and 2023 saw low valuations for all companies. Additionally, the company's founders were approached by a strategic buyer wishing to acquire its assets.Students use the financial data for FemHealth presented in the Data Challenge, as well as data on comparable companies in the sector, to create valuation scenarios for the founders' consideration. Finally, students make recommendations to the founders as they consider whether to exit in a down market for startup valuations. The attraction to the founders is twofold: the opportunity to sell to a reputable pharmaceutical company with a long history of producing products for reproductive care while simultaneously harvesting their investment and enabling friends and family to earn returns on the seed funding they provided FemHealth Inc. This valuation challenge is suitable for use with students who have completed their core business requirements in finance and accounting courses, and ideally understand technology platforms.
