This Data Challenge focuses on data-driven decision making regarding the diversification of a company and avoiding agency problems. An analyst investigated the financial data of companies to support his client company's management in convincing shareholders to diversify the business. Data-based decisions indicate that the decision is objective and not biased to the advantage of management, avoiding the chance of agency problems. The analyst first visualized the available dataset using descriptive and inferential analysis to infer any difference in the performance of diversified and undiversified companies in terms of sales and net profit. In addition to visualizing, the analyst examined the data for any statistical significance in the difference in net profit due to diversification and diversifying into the food and beverages industry using data-analysis techniques such as panel data multiple regression. Further, the analyst checked the same for a new variable, return on assets. In this Data Challenge, students take on the role of the analyst and use data analysis to support diversification decision making.
