Summary:
This data challenge describes a scenario in a coffee company headquartered in Germany that imports coffee beans from Africa and South America. The beans are transported through ports in Germany and Belgium to coffee bean roasting plants located in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Afterwards, the roasted coffee beans are transported to regional distribution centers located in various European countries, including in the United Kingdom, which is one of the prime locations. This challenge chooses London as an example for the analysis of city delivery routes. Students should determine the shipment plan and city delivery routes for these coffee beans to meet the company's requirements on costs and environmental performance. Information for decision-making includes, for example, demand data, transportation and inventory costs, and travelling distance. Different models and methods may be used to solve this logistics management problem, such as the Transport and Transshipment Model, Vehicle Routing Problem, Travelling Salesman Problem, and Linear Programming. Students need to familiarize themselves with these models' applicable contexts and conditions and should select appropriate ones to frame the different stages of transportation problems. After creating and comparing two transportation plans with different objectives, students will be prompted to think about how businesses should make decisions between cost control and environmental protection.
