Summary:
Strategic management courses teach frameworks of strategic planning, such as Porter's Five Forces and the Resource Based View of the firm, but may overlook strategy implementation. For those who have been involved in strategic management, it is easy to recognize that the best laid strategies can come undone due to differing motivations, ambitions, and intentions of actors in the firm. For a field that often seeks to assert itself as a rational empirical endeavor, strategic management practice is a decidedly interpretive and political pursuit. The political nature of strategic management comes to the fore during periods of organizational restructuring. In this Data Challenge, students are tasked with restructuring Millennium Airlines. The organization faces a variety of external challenges, such as climate change, competition from budget airlines, and a global pandemic. These adverse trends have tested the organization's hybrid functional structure and suggest the need for a different arrangement. However, with a deeply divided group of personalities composing the organization, what levels of change will be possible? In this Data Challenge, students are asked to restructure Millennium Airlines to account for the politics of the organization and to enable it to be more competitive in its external environment.
