Summary:
In this hypothetical Data Challenge, students are presented with background information about Liam Thompson, an entrepreneur trying to enter the watch industry and aiming to become a global player as an entrepreneur. The information includes survey-based and qualitative data outlining and signaling various competitive strategies followed by existing players in the watch industry and accordingly identifying the strategic groups (i.e., firms that follow similar competitive strategies). The Data Challenge takes students through factor analysis, ways to identify competitive dimensions, strategic groups, and white spaces (i.e., potential business opportunities in the industry or competitive positions that no player has occupied) in the watch industry. After conducting factor analysis, students are asked to identify the competitive strategies players in the watch industry are following by virtue of belonging to a particular strategic group and whether any white spaces are available. Students are also tasked with creating strategic group diagrams based on qualitative analysis. To conduct strategic group analysis, students should have an understanding of Porter's generic competitive strategies, strategic group analysis, and qualitative analysis like manual content or thematic analysis. Students should also have an understanding of exploratory factor analysis, as they can use it in this Data Challenge to generate the dimensions of competitive strategies, as well as experience or knowledge of conducting exploratory factor analysis using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science).
