Summary:
In the complex and fluid context of international business, proficiency in data analysis is not just desirable but essential. International business is much more complex than simply entering a new market in a different country. As large, medium, and small companies expand by operating increasingly across borders, a deeper understanding of global markets, the diversity of consumer behaviours, and important cultural dynamics becomes ever more paramount. International business, strategy, and operations require managers to grapple with multilayered complexity, such as incompatible laws and regulations, historical cultural routines and practices, and unique market structures. Even in a seemingly interconnected world of digital technology, geographical features (like oceans, finite natural resources, and human infrastructure) still create challenges and opportunities that managers must be attuned to. These multilayered factors are constantly in flux and changing, so future managers may lack access to full, complete, and accurate data sets when making decisions for the real world. This requires practitioners to overcome the challenges posed by messy and incomplete data, leaving them to make the best decision possible with the information they have at that particular point in time. For these reasons, it is important to never focus on a single point or rely on one type of data when making these decisions but instead to triangulate using various qualitative and quantitative data sets. Successful analysis is not limited to crunching numbers alone, but to understanding the limitations of available data and framing the problem in hand before developing reasoned and defensible solutions suitable to a local context. This portfolio of unique scenarios, based on real situations, encourages students to develop their confidence and analytical skills.
