- In this Data Challenge, students are presented with background information about a carpentry business that manufactures tables and chairs. The information provided includes details about the following: profitability of products, labor hours required to make each product, as well as constraints under which the carpentry business operates. At the start of this work, students should be familiar with management by the theory of constraints as well as linear programming optimization modeling and sensitivity analysis. Alternatively, these methodologies can be taught using the information provided.In the first phase of the challenge, students use information provided to determine the optimum allocation of limited resources resulting in maximum profitability for the business. In the second phase, students conduct sensitivity analysis to determine how changing constraints impacts profitability.
