In this Data Challenge, undergraduate and graduate students are presented with background information about a business ("Cilantro") that owns and operates a chain of coffeehouses in Egypt. The information also includes detailed data about the external environment (macro-environment and coffeeshop industry in Egypt and two potential countries of expansion). The data are presented in the form of graphs and tables as well as numbers embedded in the text narrative.Students should be familiar with the basic macro-trend analysis and ratio analysis techniques. Alternatively, this method can be taught using the same data set provided. After conducting an extensive external and internal analysis using an evidence-based strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) framework, the students are then asked to come up with four strategic alternatives. In the second phase, they evaluate two countries for expansion using comparative decision-making. The Data Challenge concludes by asking students to develop a set of persuasive recommendations.
