- Summary:
- In this Data Challenge, students are presented with a forecast for 2021, including costing data for a company that manufactures packaging solutions. The data include material costs, inventory holding costs, hiring and layoff costs, subcontract costs, regular time cost of labor, overtime cost of labor, and subcontracting costs. Students are required to build and use the aggregate planning model(s) to decide on a production plan for the year the forecast has been given. The aggregate planning model uses linear programming to minimize the cost of creating a production plan by adjusting the number of workers (i.e., production capacity), inventory or stockouts, or labor hours (i.e., overtime or idle time). Aggregate plans are operational-level strategies in a supply chain and usually are for a 3- to 18-month period. This example uses a 12-month aggregate plan. Once the aggregate plan is developed, students will create different what-if scenarios to determine the possible impact of inaccurate forecasts on their current plan and consider whether the plan could be adjusted to meet the new scenarios.
