Summary:
This Data Challenge follows Liam Thompson, CEO of a manufacturing industry and startup manager who wants to internationalize and explore whether his company, Zavaso, should use joint venture or acquisition as a mode of entry. Because entry-mode decisions are irreversible, Thompson must be careful in his choice of the foreign market to enter and the entry mode, that is, whether he should use joint ventures or acquisitions as an entry mode. This case introduces students to the CAGE (cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic) distance framework that firms frequently use to make internalization decisions, that is, the foreign market to enter and the entry mode. The case allows students to use binary logistic regression to examine the critical determinants of the CAGE distance framework in making internationalization decisions. Three important prerequisites for completing this Data Challenge are as follows: students should have (1) background knowledge of the CAGE distance framework, (2) awareness about entry modes such as joint ventures and acquisitions, and (3) proficiency in applying binary logistic regression analysis using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). Students must apply binary logistic regression on the data to decide on the entry-mode choice.
