In this data challenge, students are presented with background information about the second-largest bank failure in US history. On March 10, 2023, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), the 16th largest US bank with assets of about 200 billion, collapsed. SVB's collapse left many hedge funds, private equity, venture capital (VC), and tech entrepreneurs wondering how they would get their cash back. SVB's failure is also characterized by a bank run, largely fueled by social media, where 42 billion (or 25% of SVB's deposits) were withdrawn in one day. Students will follow the challenge's protagonist, Helen Picardy, a risk management expert, who is investigating the factors behind SVB's failure. At first glance, SVB's collapse would appear to have come as a surprise to financial markets. But was it really a complete surprise, or were there red flags that signalled impending difficulties? Did SVB collapse due to capital adequacy or liquidity issues, or some other combination of factors? In this data c, students utilize data drawn from financial statements, annual and 8K reports, Federal Reserve interest rates, and stock price data to examine the factors surrounding SVB's monetary losses and failure. The challenge is appropriate for use in undergraduate and graduate (including MBA, MSc) courses in finance, international banking, international business analytics, and strategy. There are no prerequisites for completing the challenge.
